Chalta (scientific name:

Dillenia indica) is a popular fruit that is especially known for its sour taste in some parts of Bangladesh and India. It is used to make pickles, sour curries and various dishes. Below are the steps for cultivating Chalta:

Steps for cultivating Chalta:

1. Land selection and preparation

Soil:

Sandy-loamy soil is most suitable. However, there must be a drainage system.

Light: Sunny place is suitable.

Land preparation:

Fertilizer should be applied by making holes. The size of the holes is usually kept 1 meter × 1 meter × 1 meter.

2. Planting seedlings

Reproduction method:

Seedling preparation from seeds

Cutting or grafting (for better yield)

Seedling planting time: It is best to plant seedlings at the beginning of the monsoon (June-July).

Seedling-to-tree distance: To keep enough space on the tree, it is better to keep the distance between the trees 6-8 meters.

3.  Fertilizer Application

Organic Fertilizer: 15-20 kg of cow dung fertilizer per hole.

Chemical Fertilizer (per tree per year):

Urea – 200 grams

TSP – 300 grams

MOP – 200 grams

Fertilizer should be applied in three parts before the monsoon, in the middle of the monsoon and at the end of the monsoon.

4. Irrigation and Drainage

During the rainy season, drainage arrangements should be made if excess water accumulates.

Irrigation should be given occasionally during the dry season.

5. Pruning

The tree should be pruned once a year to shape it and increase yield.

6. Diseases and Remedies

Palata trees generally have few diseases.

If insects or fungi appear occasionally, insecticides or fungicides can be used (seek expert advice if necessary).

7. Fruit Collection

Palata trees start bearing fruit from the age of 4–5.

Fruit harvesting time: Between October and January.

Special Tips:

Weeding should be done regularly for 2-3 years after planting.

The fruit is in high demand in the local market for sale, especially for pickling and cooking.
